The 80’s are being stolen from us by young whippersnappers with far too much time on their hands.
I’m not claiming to own the ‘80’s. Just because I graduated from high school in the ‘80’s and grew up listening to all of the ‘80’s music, I don't have rights to the entire decade. I can share the rights with my fellow Gen-X-ers, just not with the entire cast of “Glee."
"Glee" just did a cover of “Don’t You Want Me?”, which I discovered when I was searching for ring-tones. I felt slightly ill after seeing it as the number one hit. It was MY song when I was 13; why was the “Glee” cast allowed to sing it?
The kids doing the re-make of the song were probably born in the 90’s. I guess I'm kind of ignorant, but I didn’t even know that people were still being born in the ‘90’s. After the first virus of the impending Zombie Apocolypse hit in ’94 around the time Kurt Cobain died, I thought that most people just stopped having kids for a while because of over-population and a fear of genetic mutations. Apparently, I was wrong.
The re-make of ‘80’s songs by kids that young is an affront to those of us who actually survived the ‘80’s. Little teeny-boppers should not be allowed to sing the anthems of our youth. Don’t they have their own stupid songs they can sing?
What’s next? The Karate Kid has already been re-made. Is some young director going to take it upon himself to re-make all of John Hughes’ brilliant movies? Will Justin Bieber play the jock role in the next Breakfast Club? Who is going to play all 99 of Molly Ringwald’s roles? Will Lady Gaga do a re-make of a Boy George song to attract an older audience?
I don’t know about you, but I’m really scared for my cultural heritage.
Generation X-ers need to watch out: the 80’s are being stolen from us. Sticky-sweet bubble gum pop music versions of our favorite songs are being belted out by people with no real concept of what life was like before the Internet or cable TV. Watered-down versions of the movies that we grew up with and loved are next.
I suggest that Gen-X-ers, the Me-generation, band together to form and ‘80’s Preservation Society before our heritage is destroyed and the “art” of our generation is watered down any further. The time to act is now.
