This year for Christmas, in an attempt to make sure that my nephews grow up as cool as possible, I decided that they were getting some of my favorite childhood movies on DVD. Personally, I think modern children’s television and movies are pretty atrocious and could never compare to the Muppets, Fievel or the Fraggles. Exposing the boys to the things I watched as a kid became my mission and I selected two movies for stage one. Since Rudolph, Frostyand Charley Brown still air every year, I made my picks a little different…
The Muppets take Manhattan – because, really, what is a childhood Christmas without the Muppets? I chose this primarily because it was one of my favorites as a child.
Emmet Otter’s Jug Band Christmas- while not necessarily and 80’s movie, I grew up looking forward to seeing this on TV every year and as an adult, I’ve watched it on Netflix more than once while the snow flies outside. Also, River Bottom Nitemare Band? Enough said.
I think that this summer, for his 4th birthday, my Godson will be receiving Fraggle Rock Season One, because, well, because what four year-old doesn’t need the Fraggles for his birthday? Also, it means that I can buy his brother the second season for his birthday and in another year or so, they’ll have a full DVD library that I would have cried over as a child.
I genuinely feel bad for kids these days, they totally don’t know what they’re missing by not growing up in the 80’s.
