80s Nostalgia Should Come with a Disclaimer

We love the 80s but some of it has to go

80s movies are some of our favorite films of all time. We could definitey watch The Goonies, Gremlins and Neverending Story on repeat for basically forever. But there were some pretty problematic films that just didn't stand the test of time. Some of them could use with some progressive updates while others might be better off forgotten. Revenge of the Nerds, for example, is filled with misogyny and even rape. Having sex with someone you think is someone else is rape. It's not funny and it's certainly not a #relationshipgoal or a way to get someone to fall in love with you. Just thinking about that makes me barf a little in my mouth.

So many 80s movies are filled with such wince-inducing scenes, scenes that treat women as conquests, objects and trophies without any agency or character development. It's films like those that give today's incels the ideas about "deserving" certain women. Of course not everybody took those movies literally--not everyone is an incel--but we do live in a violent rape culture where plots like these are not only still present in modern films but in actual reality as well.

My 13-year-old is so quick to point out these issues to me when I introduce her to new-to-her movies that I don't even like some of the old ones anymore, and that's okay. There's plenty of others to enjoy, there are plenty of new ones to be made and I hope that the rest of her generation is following suit.

What 80s movies do you wish you could forget?
