While plenty of 80s fashions have made a comeback in life, you can also sometimes spot them on the runway. Anthony Vaccarello portrayed a collection for Saint Laurent in Paris this week featuring shoulder pads, fur coats, leather shorts and other staples from the 80s with a twist: foregoing the typical colorful fashion of the time, these outfits were almost all black.
Did you know that there is a series of DVDs called The Decade You Were Born? Each one features a different decade, giving you a quick overview of everything that happened during your infancy and formative years while you were too busy learning to walk and use the toilet to watch the news. It's the perfect thing to watch if you don't remember the 80s at all yet you're proud to say, "I'm an 80s kid!"
As a child of the 80s, I can often spot others of my kind. If you hum "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" a little differently, pump your fist in the air after someone you ask out says yes or if you randomly shout, "Goonies never say die!" or "Be confident, Atreyu!" you might be in this club. Those are just the pop cultural references, of course; big hair and bright, bold colors are also a hallmark of the 1980s.
The 80s were a time of excess and yuppie pleasures, as Christian Bale's gleeful murderer reminds us in American Psycho. In reality, there were many serial killers of the 1980s that were truly chilling people, causing chaos and terror wherever they went.
