Knight Rider

Knight Rider

It seemed pretty far fetched at the time.

I decided to watch some old ‘80s TV episodes on Netflix today.  One particular TV show that caught my eye was Knight Rider.  I remember making it a point to watch these shows when I was a kid.  Back then I thought that Knight Rider was one of the top shows on the television. I am struck by a couple of things as I’m watching Knight Rider now through older eyes.  The first thing I notice is that my definition of a great television show has changed greatly over the years.  Knight Rider is pretty cheesy.  The second thing I can’t help but notice is how many things that seemed so inconceivable as far as technology are either currently being done or are being worked on.  A reference was made to the micro chip and how unbelievable it was that the Silicone Valley would become a financially booming area because of it.

I also look at the Trans Am used in the series and I can’t help but remember how futuristic that car looked to me back then.   Flash forward about 30 years and Pontiac, the makers of the Trans Am, are no longer in existence.

I wonder what it would be like to go back in time and talk to the creators of the Knight Rider television series?  I’d tell them that I am from the year 2012 and that in our time cars come equipped with voice activated stereos.  You can dial people on the phone in your car without even lifting a finger just by saying a name.  Cars also come equipped with devices that can tell you exactly how to get to your destination and when you make a wrong turn.  Then I would get thrown into the looney bin until the year 2012.
